All the Details, Explained

We believe in transparency. Here are honest answers to the questions we hear most.

What are porcelain veneers and how do they work?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. They are carefully bonded to your natural teeth to improve appearance, correct imperfections, and create a beautiful, natural-looking smile. Veneers can improve the shape, color, size, and overall symmetry of your teeth, so your smile looks brighter, more balanced, and more refined without looking fake or overdone. Each veneer is handcrafted by a skilled ceramist to match your unique facial features and desired look.

Do you have to shave down a lot of tooth structure for veneers?

Absolutely not. One of our core philosophies is to be as conservative as possible. We take pride in removing the minimum amount of tooth structure necessary, and in many cases the preparation is very minimal. Some cases may even qualify for no-prep veneers. Dr. Khan approaches every case the same way she would for herself, a family member, or a close friend: conservatively, thoughtfully, and with a commitment to doing no harm. The goal is always to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible while still achieving a beautiful result.

How long do veneers last?

With proper care and maintenance, porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years or even longer. Their longevity depends on factors like your bite, daily habits, and how well you care for them over time. Regular dental checkups, gentle oral hygiene, and avoiding habits like biting hard objects can all help extend their lifespan. Many of our patients have had their veneers for well over a decade and they still look as good as the day they were placed.

Is the veneer procedure painful?

The procedure is generally very comfortable and minimally invasive. Local anesthesia is used during tooth preparation so you do not feel any discomfort. Most patients experience little to no pain during or after the procedure. If you are feeling nervous about treatment, we also offer oral sedation options to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the process.

Can veneers fix gaps, chips, and discoloration?

Yes. Veneers can be an excellent solution for a wide range of cosmetic concerns, including gaps between teeth, chipped or worn teeth, uneven shapes, and stains or discoloration that do not respond well to whitening. They are often a very effective way to improve several concerns at once, which is why patients love them. Instead of treating one issue at a time, veneers can create a more complete smile transformation with a result that still looks natural and individualized.

How do I care for my veneers after the appointment?

You should care for your veneers much like you care for natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with your regular dental cleanings and exams. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens, or hard candies, since that can damage veneers just like it can damage natural teeth. We also recommend a custom night guard to protect your investment from grinding or clenching while you sleep — something most patients get used to within a few nights. With good home care and the right protection, your veneers can stay healthy and beautiful for many years.

What is the typical timeline for getting veneers?

The full process usually takes two to three appointments over the course of a few weeks. It begins with a consultation, where we talk about your goals and evaluate your smile. After that, the teeth are prepared and impressions or digital records are taken so your custom veneers can be crafted. At the final appointment, the veneers are carefully placed and bonded. We respect your time and keep appointments efficient, so you can get back to your day. Throughout the process, the goal is not just to make your teeth look better, but to design a smile that fits your face, your features, and your overall look.

How much do veneers cost?

The cost depends on your individual goals and the scope of treatment. Some patients want to improve just a few teeth, while others want a more comprehensive smile transformation. Because every case is different, the best way to get accurate pricing is to schedule a consultation, either virtually or in person. We can evaluate your smile, understand what you want to change, and then provide a personalized treatment plan and estimate based on your specific needs. We also offer flexible payment options to help make treatment more accessible.

Will my veneers look natural?

Yes, that is always the goal. Beautiful veneers should enhance your smile without making it look obvious or artificial. We pay close attention to shape, proportion, color, and how the teeth fit your face so the final result looks polished, natural, and appropriate for you. The best cosmetic dentistry does not look like cosmetic dentistry. It simply looks like an exceptionally beautiful smile.

Am I a good candidate for veneers?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for veneers. During your consultation, Dr. Khan will evaluate your oral health, your bite, and your goals to determine whether veneers are the best option for you. In some cases, other treatments may be recommended first, or a different cosmetic approach may be a better fit. We will always be honest with you about what will give you the best long-term result — even if that means recommending something other than veneers.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?

Veneers cover only the front surface of a tooth and require minimal preparation, while crowns cover the entire tooth and are typically used when a tooth is more damaged or structurally compromised. Veneers are ideal for cosmetic improvements on teeth that are otherwise healthy. Dr. Khan will always recommend the most conservative option that achieves your goals — if a veneer can do the job, there is no reason to do a crown.

Can I see what my veneers will look like before committing?

Yes. We use digital smile design and diagnostic previews so you can see an approximation of your final result before any work begins. This helps us collaborate on the shape, size, and overall look you want, and gives you confidence that we are on the same page before moving forward. You are an active part of the design process, not just a passenger.

What happens if a veneer chips or comes off?

While this is uncommon with well-made porcelain veneers, it can happen. If a veneer chips, it can often be repaired or polished depending on the severity. If a veneer comes off, it can usually be rebonded. We are always here to take care of you after treatment — your relationship with us does not end when the veneers are placed.

Do you offer virtual consultations?

Yes. If you are not local or simply want to get started from the comfort of your home, we offer virtual consultations where you can share photos of your smile and discuss your goals with Dr. Khan. It is a great first step to understanding your options before committing to an in-person visit. Many of our patients start with a virtual consultation and then come in for a detailed evaluation when they are ready to move forward.
